Mauran (1896-1943) had long, deep family ties to Providence, though he was reared and married in Philadelphia. So the choice of one of Philadelphia’s best Georgian Revival architects, Edmund Gilchrist, in his only Rhode Island commission, for the design of the house is not surprising. Even the form of the house suggests Center City Philadelphia’s juxtaposition of Colonial and Federal forms in this three-part composition. Taken as a whole the house has a strong proto-Post Modern feel, especially with the enormous fanlight over the front door, but without the self-conscious wit or irony that is ultimately fatiguing in so much of the late twentieth-century style.
