Across from each other on this bustling thoroughfare are two typical early twentieth-century forms, both several-story buildings that include storefronts at ground level and residential space above. The building on the south side of the street retains an increasingly rare Carrara glass storefront, while that on the north side of the street (161 Atwells, pictured below, since demolished) features a vehicular passage to the rear at one side of the façade, a configuration particularly common to the east end of Federal Hill, where population and building density was perhaps the greatest in early twentieth-century Providence.
