Two Queen Anne/Colonial Revival houses flank the west end of Harvard Avenue, one built as a two-family investment-producing property and the other a large single-family dwelling. For many years these house were two of the most seriously deteriorated houses on Broad Street, and both had suffered from arson. Creative public-private partnerships led to the rehabilitation in the early 1990s of the Smith House, as well as the house around the corner at 39-41 Harvard Avenue. Renovation of the Atwood House followed a few years later.
