Double houses enjoyed modest, if enduring, popularity in Providence for over a hundred years, beginning just after 1800. This one is elaborately decked out in English Regency style, coming into popularity in the years immediately following the Great War. Built in a U plan, with principal entrances for each unit in the pavilions that project at the east and west ends of the façade, the house achieves visual distinction through the full-height windows, capped by arched trellises, that flank those entrances. The relatively high stringcourse between the first and second stories and the low-slung slate hip roof reinforce the building’s horizontality. The low brick terrace on which the house stands integrates it pleasantly into its corner site.
