Helmut, Obata & Kassebaum’s tower is urbanistically a far greater contribution to the city than its immediate contemporary, Old Stone Square. On the plus side, it fills the lot onto the street line and contributes an identifiable profile to the skyline; on the minus side, its twenty-story massing is a trifle too low for the site, thus its visual response to the Industrial Trust Co next door is timid, and its exterior cladding – slick granite facades framing green-reflective-glass side elevations – was hackneyed before construction began. Not bad, but it could have been better in the greater contexts of the immediate vicinity of Kennedy Plaza, Downtown Providence, and the urban skyline.
