Carpenter, a metal supplier and member of Central Congregational Church’s building committee, decided to engage Carrère & Hastings for his own house following completion of the church next door. He chose another revivalist mode in which the firm was exceptionally capable, that of Louis XIII. So here we have a bit of the Place des Vosges in Providence. And perhaps the success of this project prompted the firm’s return engagement five years later [to design the Sprague-Ladd House].
