Architect Fred Field was only in his mid-twenties when he designed and built his house, one of the most exuberant Queen Anne/Colonial Revival houses in the city. It has a delightful brashness that matches the age and ambitions of a young architect. If Clifton Hall’s house was a calculatedly cautious bellwether, this is a “take-on-all-comers” statement. The extravagant juxtaposition of forms, the exceptionally calculated variety of materials, and the superb flair with which it’s all pulled together anticipate the heady self-confidence in this country during the bully years of the 1890s.
