Wilkinson (1819-1894), superintendent of Gorham Mfg Co, built this ample “Olde English” house for ease of access to the new jewelry manufacturing plant (demolished in the late 1990s), whose move to the nearby westernmost end of Adelaide Avenue he had just supervised. Many of Elmwood’s house from the early 1890s were built for workers of all levels of responsibility at Gorham. Wilkinson engaged Edward I. Nickerson for the design, which perhaps unintentionally equivocates between the lingering Queen Anne and the imminent Neo-Tudor styles. It is a superb composition of brick, shingle, stucco, and half timbering, one of the neighborhood’s best houses.
