Perhaps Robert Lippitt’s decision to build diagonally across the street (193 Hope Street) drew his brother Henry Lippitt and family to the neighborhood. Tefft, the architect that Robert Lippitt employed, had left the country for his Grand Tour of Europe, never to return. So Henry went with the estimable Russell Warren, near the end of his professional career, who designed this double house for the family. A more-than-competent, cruciform-plan Italianate double house, reflecting Warren’s continuing architectural agility in his early seventies, it exerts a presence on the corner of Hope and Angell Streets yet is not so commanding as the family’s next house across the street, built a few years later.
