Like small-scale banks (several of which survive) and theatres (all gone), small hotels like this is one once dotted Downtown Providence. It was built in the late nineteenth century and remodeled into its present guise by William R. Walker & Son, at exactly the same time the firm made a much more elaborate statement at the Majestic Theatre in glazed terra-cotta. While hotel use has long abandoned this building, the place nevertheless retains the intimacy and charm often associated with modest hostelries.
