Even more than the Potter House, this Queen Anne design is an exceptionally agitated architectural composition for Stone, Carpenter & Willson in the late 1880s. Mason, like Louis Comstock, had a meat-packing business on nearby Willard Avenue. It comes off as more than a tad showy, the hubristic testimony to the great success of a small-town boy who came to the city and made good. Mason and the architectural firm must have enjoyed an amicable relationship, however, for five years later he returned to them to design his refrigerated warehouse, demolished in the 1990s. The house has been a funeral home since Mason’s death in 1916.
