Stone, Carpenter & Willson adapted the exterior form and decorative vocabulary developed by H.H. Richardson for small municipal libraries in their construction of the university’s first gymnasium. Similar to dedicating a building for general student social activities (up the hill in Faunce House), setting aside a whole building for physical activity shows the increasing institutionalization of all phases of student life into the college campus near the dawn of the twentieth century.
