These three restaurants (along with Camille’s and Angelo’s Civita Farnese), two located in mid-nineteenth century houses similar to that at 93-95 Atwells, have been Federal Hill landmarks for almost eighty years. While Old Canteen and Camille’s have changed their names since their doors opened (although the current occupants are of more than fifty years’ duration), they represent the establishment and perpetuation of an important cultural contribution to a greater Providence area. As institutions that clearly retain the look and feel of the traditional Italian restaurant as developed here in the early twentieth century (save for the somewhat-gamy-but-kind-of-fun storefront on the one-story section of Angelo’s), all three provide the base from which has risen the flourishing restaurant scene along this street, with mostly Mediterranean offerings for every plate.
