Probably one of the last stylish, substantial houses built along the old “Towne Street,” dry-goods-merchant Richmond’s house demonstrates an elegant accommodation to its steep site. Brick construction in Providence almost always betokens an association with wealth, but even more compelling here is the luscious geometry achieved by the juxtaposition on the basic brick box of the sweeping double-run entrance stair, low hip roof, and soaring chimneys.
