The building that completed the file of buildings lining the front campus, Slater was Brown’s first building dedicated to dormitory use and it incorporated the latest fireproof technology. Stone & Carpenter’s blend of Gothic and Romanesque forms was much admired following the building’s completion, and the University of Maine (home state of architect Alfred Stone) commissioned a copy soon thereafter.
