Like Scialo’s, Almonte’s retains both a storefront and an interior from a Depression-era remodeling. There is perhaps no other dry goods store in the state (and precious few in the country) that retains such a strong, stodgy period flavor. Its survival is remarkable, especially in the wake of the most recent trendification of Atwells Avenue. For the sake of its preservation one can only hope that Huey Lewis & The News was right: it’s “Hip to be Square.”

Note: Sadly, Almonte’s closed sometime after 2003 and the storefront was remodeled. The photo shown is from 2003.
