Here are three variations on turn-of-the-twentieth-century commercial blocks. Stone, Carpenter & Wilson’s busy and somewhat fragmented Burrill Building (291 Westminster Street) holds the corner well enough but lacks the overall cohesion of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge’s exquisitely detailed Tilden-Thurber Building (292 Westminster Street), an appropriate setting for the headquarters of Providence’s leading jewelry store. Angell & Swift’s Cherry & Webb (275 Westminster Street) is a looser, fresher version, more unified and modern with banked window treatment.
