8 properties from 1708 to 1845
The properties featured in the Candlelight Tour offer a representative sample of the buildings that first put Providence on the map as an important place for encountering and preserving historic buildings. It includes the home of a “Founding Father,” a high-style Federal house smacking of wealth derived from the China Trade, several of the middle-class late 18th- and early 19th-century houses that define the character of the western slope of College Hill, and several properties that reflect the large discretionary income accrued through shipping and manufacturing activities. Beyond their obvious historic and architectural significance, they represent the legacy whose preservation ignited the preservation flame in Providence fifty years ago that burns so brightly today.
